Fine Particulates (PM 2.5) – Code YELLOW
Regional Maximum PM 2.5 Concentrations:
Thursday, May 29, 2008:
Ozone – GREEN (47 AQI or 55 ppb)
PM 2.5 – GREEN (32 AQI or 9.7 µg/m3)
Short-Term Discussion: Ozone levels have risen quickly over the last hour or so. Warm southwesterly flow and mostly sunny skies have contributed to this trend. There is a batch of clouds currently making its way across the state. This should cross over the forecast area later this afternoon and hopefully keep monitor concentrations just inside the moderate range.
Partly cloudy overnight with and outside chance of a shower or thunderstorm; temperatures are expected to fall to near 60 degrees. Becoming mostly cloudy on Saturday with a shower or possibly even a gusty thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain. Afternoon temperatures are expected to be near 80 degrees. Clouds and showers should limit Saturday’s ozone concentrations to the code GREEN (good) range, while high humidity levels should keep fine-particulate concentrations in the code YELLOW (moderate) range.
Gradual clearing overnight with temperatures expected to fall into the mid 50s. Partly sunny, breezy and less humid on Sunday with afternoon temperatures forecast to reach the mid 70s. Clouds, less humidity and northwesterly winds should keep Sunday’s ozone and fine-particulate concentrations in the code GREEN (good) range.
Mainly clear overnight with temperatures falling into the low 50s. Mostly sunny and a bit warmer on Monday with afternoon temperatures expected to be in the upper 70s. Sunny skies and light winds should allow Monday’s ozone and fine-particulate concentrations climb into the low code YELLOW (moderate) range.
Extended: Trending warmer early next week with some uncertainty regarding rainfall. The models are suggesting that rain will develop over the forecast area by midweek. We’ll probably have a better idea of exact conditions on Monday. In the meantime, we expect air-quality readings to remain in the moderate range early next week.
